Statement on the demonstration on December 16th at the climate summit at the Bella Center
Climate Justice Action has called for a demonstration on December 16th. Attac Denmark can support the demonstration and its purpose. We want a peaceful demonstration and presupposes that the protesters - as outlined by the CJA - acts without violence. We hope the official representatives at the climate summit will take this opportunity to exchange views, listen to the opinions of the grassroots and their reports on how the human caused climate change has already degraded livelihoods of eg. poor farmers in the south.
The official UN negotiations at the Bella Center can be followed in different ways: some NGOs are accredited and will report from the talks and there are daily briefings on Klimaforum09 giving the opportunity to follow parts of the negotiations. However, the 12-15000 official delegates at UN climate summit at the Bella Center are not able to continuously obtain information on grassroots opinion.
Therefore, CJA will try to get the official participants in the COP15 in dialog at a civil disobedience action on December 16th. It is the desire to have the opportunity to present other views on the solutions to the climate problems, especially that the market is not the solution, but part of the reason behind the climate problems, which are already affecting peasants in the Global South in the form of drought and desertification.
Attac would also like to draw you anttention to other events taking place, among them the great climate-demonstration on December 12th and the alternative climate summit KLIMAFORUM09 taking place between the 7th and the 18th of December.
