Let’s raise our voices in Ireland!
[2008-05-13]

Another Europe is possible!

Let’s raise our voices in Ireland!

Dear Friends throughout the European Union,

On December 13, the Heads of Governments of the EU signed the “Lisbon Treaty” which is expected to enter into force on 1 January 2009. This Treaty will be the basis for the functionning of the EU and dictate its political direction as well. The Lisbon Treaty incorporates all the essential features of the Constitutional Treaty, rejected in France and the Netherlands by referenda in 2005 and it upholds and reinforces the neoliberal character of the EU. The interests of European peoples are not considered, or only marginally; the level of democracy in the European Union remains lower than in the member states. Popular demands for a socially progressive, peaceful, democratic and ecological Europe are ignored.

European elites are determined to carry out this “coup d’état” and have consequently denied their peoples any voice. Governments deliberately misinform their citizens and exclude them from the democratic decision process. Only in Ireland does the Constitution mandate a referendum, to be held on June 12th.

Because we cannot vote ourselves, we are asking you to ask the Irish people to vote NO in their own interests, but in our name as well. We see this as an expression of solidarity with the citizens of the Irish Republic who are being made to bear a heavy responsibility. They alone, among all Europeans, can exercise their democratic rights. Through them, you can express your views on this theft of democracy in the only way remaining : by asking the Irish people to reject the Lisbon Treaty. Please go to the pan-European website

Just like the French and Dutch media and elites in 2005, the Irish YES forces are trying to convince Irish citizens that they will be the “spoilers” and the “black sheep” of Europe unless they vote YES. However, if Irish citizens receive a strong message of solidarity from citizens all over the EU, they cannot be blackmailed into voting against their own interests and the interests of all ordinary Europeans.

We say YES to Europe, but we demand a new start!
For a peaceful, social, ecological, and democratic Europe!

We say NO to the militarization of the EU, to its neoliberal foundations and to the weakening of democratic and social rights.

A European Union that works in the interest of the people is only possible if all citizens of the EU can decide for themselves if a new Treaty should become the foundation of our common future.

PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR EFFORT IS SUPPORTED BY THE CAEUC—THE IRISH CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE EU CONSTITUTION—A COALITION UNITING THE IRISH PEACE, ECOLOGY, PROGRESSIVE AND ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT MOVEMENTS [SIXTEEN ORGANISATIONS IN ALL]. THEY TOO ASK YOU TO ADD YOUR VOICE TO THE NO FORCES.

Please, support our petition:

Please, forward this Email to your friends, sisters, parents, relatives, colleagues, business and other partners in all member countries of the EU.
